The Swiss National Day Occassion

The Swiss National Day (German: Schweizer Bundesfeier; French: Fête Nationale Suisse; Romansh FIAstar naziunala Svizra) occurs every 1 August. It commemorates the birth of the federal government occurred in the first days of August of 1291.

With the conclusion of confederation the first three cantons (Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, these primitive cantons) gave an alliance to counter pressure from the Habsburgs of Austria through the administration of the bailiff. The morning of this day is the traditional celebration on the Rütli meadow (or Rütli).

Participate in the President of the Confederation, along with other prominent figures, and the event is broadcast on national television. In the evening is also communicated the President's speech. The population is used to celebrate in a rather sober in front of a bonfire, setting the flags on the balconies or shooting fireworks.

On this day at 8 pm, all the bells ring in celebration of Switzerland. Moreover, in the evening, a Swiss municipality chosen by rotation linguistic regions hosting the official festivities, broadcast networks merged. A second holiday common to all is the Swiss Federal Fast.

Originally celebrated only in the Protestant cantons, since 1643 the Catholic cantons also introduce requirements for prayer and fasting. In 1796 the Federal Diet declaring September 8, 1796 National Day of Prayer. Finally, in 1832 the Federal Diet provides that Catholics and Protestants in all cantons celebrate a day of prayer, fasting and thanksgiving on the third Sunday of September.
