Mahashivaratri is A Great Night of Shiva Celebration of Hindu People

Mahashivaratri (Great Night of Shiva) or Shiva Ratri is a Hindu festival in honor of Shiva Shrii. The feast is celebrated on the thirteenth or fourteenth day (and night) after the full moon of the Hindu month of Magh Phalguna (February / March).

The devotees of Lord Shiva (Shaivieten) fasting on these days (sometimes there is drinking or eating vegetables), but the festival is celebrated by almost all Hindus. The day is spent in meditation on Shiva and singing devotional songs (bhajans) in honor of Shiva.

Many people go these days to the temple to Shiva sacrifice. Especially the sacrifice of Bilva leaves on this day as a mascot, but has also coconuts, vegetables and specially prepared food sacred to Shiva and his wife Parvati offered.

Also there that night with some Lingam's born. Lingam's are oval objects that 9 months into the bodies of those avatars grow and be born through the mouth. They are directly connected with Shiva Lingam and the symbol represents the alpha and omega principle they, ie the Soul (God) has no beginning and no end, this indrawn on the transient die principle, or death.

The devotees sing hymns and chant mantras, especially Ohm Namah Shivaya. Some people sit around a sacred fire as a sacrifice and throwing grains into the fire as they sing for Shiva. After the whole day having fasted and meditated there is a continuous vigil with prayers and meditation for the rise of the Sun.
