A Part of Loy Krathong Story

Time

The last week of October and the first three weeks of November are the twelfth lunar month. Duan sipsong called in Thai. This time of year is the "after name" flood season. At this time there are often floods in many parts of Thailand, including Bangkok. But because the rainy season than normally on, it is clear weather with a temperature of about 25 degrees.

This is the time of the year on the day of the full moon of the twelfth lunar month, the Loy Krathong Festival is celebrated in Thailand and neighboring countries. 'Loy' literally means proceed and a "Krathong" is a boat, several materials in the form of a lotus flower.

Often several hundred meters stroomafwaards, the coins from the Krathongs met. After the Thai New Year (Songkran) on April 13 is the most popular festival.

The Festival

The festival begins in the evening when a full moon (and often the nights before and after). People then go to the banks of ponds, canals, lakes, rivers and even seas to their krathong to bring water. The candle and incense sticks are lit and then the krathong launched.

It is believed that the longer the candle will burn the better your luck in the coming years. Also let the Thai couples often have their water krathongs together. The longer they stay close together, the longer and better the relationship between living together hot. Some couples smuggle their krathongs with a small piece of string to connect.

Also, in most provinces outside Bangkok Fireworks chipped and there are paper balloons with a candle underneath embarrassed. This Thai lanterns, or Khom Loy Khom Fai called, can create a starry sky with thousands of bright spots.

As these balloons often a home-made product, sometimes they crash down and can sometimes cause considerable damage if they hit eg electricity wires or transformers, so the balloons in Bangkok prohibited. Also on the water, there are thousands of small and large boats can be seen during the Loy Krathong festival.

During this festival is all radio and television almost constantly Loy Krathong song played. In most places there is also a "Nang Noppamas" (see history) contest, where local beauties vie for the local Nang Noppamas be. Also, in most places parades, where groups of people (schools, universities, police, etc.) have built huge krathongs that the water be left. Later this than by a jury.

You do not need your own krathong making, although this is the most fun. Krathongs can be bought anywhere in street stalls, from very small to huge.

The northern provinces of Sukhothai and Chiang Mai around making a lot of work overnight and give feasts, which attract people from all over Thailand.

Since the late 90s is mainly due to the governors of Bangkok every effort to launching krathongs limit. This is because the cost of cleaning up astronomical and ever more people in Bangkok are using plastic instead of natural materials.

These actions have had little impact and the Thais continue their krathongs launch. Some more on an evening. Therefore, the governor of Bangkok in 2003 decreed that the launching of krathongs of non-natural materials is prohibited and punished.
