The Day of German Unity Short Story

The Day of German Unity (Tag der Deutschen Einheit Germ.) is Germany's national holiday and is celebrated on 3 October, commemorating the anniversary of the entry into force of the German reunification in 1990, as set out in the Einigungsvertrag, contract signed by the Governments of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic.

At the time of reunification, is shuffled off the national holiday the day of the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 1989), which also coincided with the anniversaries of the establishment of the Weimar Republic (1918) and failure the coup attempt of Adolf Hitler in 1923 (the Munich Putsch). However, the date also coincided with the anniversary of the first Nazi pogrom against Jews in 1938, the night of broken glass, so it was not deemed appropriate.

Before reunification, in Germany the "Day of Unity" was June 17, commemorating the 1953 uprising in East Germany in which a group of workers revolted against the socialist regime in protest at an increase workday.

The revolt was crushed with Soviet aid and it is estimated that the number of deaths exceeded one hundred. For its part, East Germany's national holiday was October 7, "Day of the Republic" and reminded the country's founding in 1949.
