About the Bear Berry

The Bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) is a species of heifamilie (Ericaceae). The species is on the Dutch Red List of plants as very rare and greatly reduced. The Dutch name Bearberry comes from the assumption that bears the fruit would find tasty. In the Netherlands, the plant in the dunes of Terschelling. Here since the fifties of the last century three localities present. One of the sites in the reserve the Boschplaat, followed in 2004 by a major fire struck, but the locality has survived the fire.

The Bearberry is throughout the Northern Hemisphere:

It is found in Europe Iceland, North Cape and Norway to southern Spain (Sierra Nevada), Italy (Alps) and the mountains of northern Greece.

It is found in Asia from Siberia to Turkey, the Caucasus and the Himalayas.

The species found in North America from Alaska, Greenland and Canada to the Rocky Mountains of Mexico.

The bears grape is a Netherlands 30-60 cm high shrub with creeping stems that stand up to the summit. The glossy, green, oval leaves continue opposite one to three years in the bush. The shrub blooms from March to April. The white or pink flowers form in clusters of short overhangs. The berries are red. They are eaten by birds, but are toxic to humans. Confusion is possible with the red bilberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea).

The Bearberry occurs in the dunes on moist, nutrient-poor soil.
